I like that they are both illumination and navigation.
But even more interesting, to me: Though they serve as beacons, they are also saying, “Don’t come too close!” They are helping mariners figure out where to go by pointing out where NOT to go. 😄

You really have me thinking about this now. Yes they are beacons and also warnings aren’t they? They keep us safe by warning us away, like a bright yellow warning sign.
